Liao is accused of running a fraudulent investment scheme that spanned multiple countries, targeting hundreds of victims with promises of high returns on non-existent ventures. The scheme collapsed when victims tried to withdraw their funds, only to find them misappropriated.
The arrest, carried out in a busy commercial area, was made possible through intelligence-sharing and surveillance efforts. "This case highlights the importance of international cooperation in addressing transnational crimes," an Indonesian police spokesperson stated.
Philippine authorities have initiated extradition proceedings to bring Liao back to face charges of syndicated estafa and other financial crimes. Investigators continue to trace the stolen funds and identify potential accomplices.
