ILOILO CITY – In a heartwarming display of honesty and compassion, 52-year-old taxi driver Anthony Aguirre from Pavia, Iloilo, earned widespread admiration after returning a backpack containing PHP2.4 million in cash left behind by a passenger.

For his remarkable act, Aguirre is set to be conferred the title Honorary Citizen of Iloilo City and awarded PHP20,000 in recognition of his selflessness and integrity.

“His actions reflect the integrity and compassion of Ilonggos,” said Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas in a statement on Monday.

On January 17, Aguirre transported a passenger from a hotel to the Lapuz roll-on, roll-off wharf bound for Palawan province. The following day, his operator received a call from the Iloilo City Police Office-Lapuz Police Station regarding a missing bag.

Upon inspecting his vehicle, Aguirre discovered the backpack and immediately turned it over to authorities—with the cash intact.

“Tony’s story is an inspiration,” Mayor Treñas remarked, highlighting how such acts of honesty foster trust, pride, and a sense of community.

Aguirre’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the good in humanity and the values of integrity and kindness that make a community thrive.
