Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island emitted ash for over an hour on Saturday November 9, 2024.

Philippines - The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported a new ash emission episode from Kanlaon Volcano on Saturday morning.

Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island recently released volcanic ash and gas, showing increased activity. This brief emission serves as a reminder of the volcano's potential for eruptions and the importance of ongoing monitoring to ensure public safety.

The ash emission from Kanlaon Volcano lasted for 1 hour and 16 minutes, producing light-gray plumes that rose 750 meters above the crater and drifted southwest.

Despite the recent activity, PHIVOLCS maintains Alert Level 1 over Kanlaon Volcano. This means that the volcano is currently experiencing low-level unrest.

In the past 24 hours, the volcano recorded 28 volcanic earthquakes. However, no significant seismic or infrasound signals were detected.

PHIVOLCS advises the public to avoid the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone around the volcano's crater. Civil aviation authorities are also advised to avoid flying near the volcano's summit as ash from an eruption can be hazardous to aircraft.

"In case of ash fall events that may affect communities downwind of Kanlaon’s crater, people should cover their nose and mouth with a damp, clean cloth or dust mask," PHIVOLCS said.
