VP Sara Duterte Faces Impeachment Complaints |
Vice President Sara Duterte has welcomed impeachment complaints filed against her, describing them as opportunities to clear her name amid allegations of corruption and abuse of power. Multiple groups, including lawmakers, civil society organizations, and other advocates, have filed complaints citing alleged misuse of confidential funds, betrayal of public trust, and other high crimes during her tenure as Vice President and Education Secretary.
The initial impeachment complaint, endorsed by Akbayan Rep. Perci Cendaña, accuses Duterte of various constitutional violations, including graft and corruption. A second complaint was subsequently filed by a coalition of 75 individuals and endorsed by members of the Makabayan bloc, citing mismanagement and alleged cover-ups related to PHP 612.5 million in confidential funds.
Duterte has publicly denied the allegations, labeling them as politically motivated and accusing House Speaker Martin Romualdez of orchestrating the controversy due to his alleged ambitions for the presidency. She also dismissed the complaints as part of a broader political attack against her.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has expressed opposition to the impeachment proceedings, calling them a “waste of time” that would distract Congress from addressing national issues. Nevertheless, the House is constitutionally obligated to review the complaints, which will proceed to the Justice Committee for evaluation.
These developments highlight ongoing political tensions within the Philippine government and underscore concerns about transparency and accountability in public office.
