Southern Leyte, Philippines - Students of Maasin City National High School evacuate to an open area within the campus following a magnitude 5.8 earthquake that struck the province on Thursday morning, January 23, 2025. In response to the tremor, several local government units in Southern Leyte suspended classes for safety precautions.
Classes were suspended in several areas of Southern Leyte on Thursday following a powerful earthquake that rocked the region earlier in the day. The tremor, which registered a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale, struck the province at approximately 9:30 AM, sending residents into a panic as buildings swayed and trembled.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located off the coast of the province, and it was felt strongly in the municipalities of Maasin, Sogod, and Tomas Oppus. Local authorities immediately issued advisories for residents to remain calm and stay outdoors in safe, open areas in case of aftershocks.
The Department of Education (DepEd) announced the suspension of classes in affected municipalities as a precautionary measure. "We are prioritizing the safety and well-being of students and teachers. The suspension is temporary, and we will provide further updates after a thorough assessment of the situation," said a DepEd official.
Initial reports indicate that several school buildings sustained minor damage, and local government units are assessing the structural integrity of educational facilities. Authorities are also monitoring the situation for potential aftershocks, which could further disrupt daily activities.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has deployed teams to assist in damage assessment and provide support to affected residents. No major casualties have been reported, but local officials urge the public to remain cautious.
In the aftermath of the quake, power outages were reported in some areas, while roads were temporarily closed for safety checks. The government has urged residents to stay tuned for further updates and to follow safety protocols in case of additional tremors.
As Southern Leyte recovers from this strong earthquake, residents are reminded to be prepared and vigilant. Authorities will continue to provide guidance and support as the region assesses the full impact of the natural disaster.
