Two FA-50 fighter aircraft of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) fly in formation alongside two B-1 bombers from the United States Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) during joint air patrols and air intercept training over the West Philippine Sea on Tuesday (Feb. 4, 2025). According to PAF spokesperson Col. Ma. Consuelo Castillo, the exercise is part of routine training conducted under the Mutual Defense Board-Security Engagement Board.

The West Philippine Sea (WPS) once again became a focal point of international attention as the Philippine Air Force (PAF) and the United States Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) conducted joint air exercises on February 4, 2025. This significant display of cooperation underscores the growing security concerns in the region and the commitment of both nations to bolstering their defense capabilities.

The exercise saw two FA-50PH jet fighter aircraft from the PAF and two formidable B-1 "Lancer" supersonic bombers from the US PACAF taking to the skies. The drills focused on key areas, including bilateral air patrols, air intercept training, and photo exercises. This activity falls under the umbrella of the Mutual Defense Board-Security Engagement Board (MDB-SEB) activities, designed to enhance interoperability between the two air forces, improve air domain awareness, and support shared bilateral air objectives.

Notably, the joint patrol covered areas near the contested Scarborough Shoal. This strategically important area, located within the Philippine exclusive economic zone, has been under Chinese control since 2012. The choice of location sends a clear message about the focus of the exercise and the concerns shared by the Philippines and the US regarding activities in this contested region.

The stated aims of the exercise were to enhance interoperability, improve air domain awareness, and strengthen the agile combat capabilities of both air forces. In essence, the drills served as a practical demonstration of the two nations' commitment to mutual defense and regional stability.

This joint exercise represents a significant step in strengthening the military cooperation between the Philippines and the United States. It highlights the deepening security partnership between the two allies and their shared interest in maintaining peace and stability in the West Philippine Sea.
